Technology for managing hearing loss is rapidly evolving, regardless of whether patients have a sensorineural, conductive, or mixed auditory deficit. Modalities applicable for hearing loss range from mild to profound. Otolaryngologists are relatively comfortable with the concepts behind conventional hearing aids and cochlear implants. However, the options for hearing losses that cannot be appropriately fit with either of these are expanding, and the technological advances are remarkable. The focus of this issue of Otolaryngologic Clinics of North America is on implantable auditory devices: active middle ear implants and osseointegrated options for aural rehabilitation.
