A young girl from Senegal received the gift of hearing Tuesday, capping a remarkable journey made possible by some generous New Yorkers.

Nabou Ndiaye, 8, lost her ability to hear and speak after contracting meningitis four years ago. The nation’s top ear doctor told little Nabou’s father nothing could be done to help her.

Still, Cherif Ndiaye, a tour guide living in the capital city of Dakar, never gave up hope.

“In my heart, I said there’s nothing he [the doctor] can do,” Ndiaye, 48, said.

Ndiaye solicited advice from everyone he came across and he prayed for her often.

Those prayers were answered yesterday when Nabou’s newly installed cochlear implant was activated at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in Manhattan.
